Who We Are
Mission: To ensure that all adults have the opportunity to read, write, and communicate effectively.
Literacy New Jersey is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping adults improve their literacy skills. We believe that improving literacy is a key factor in improving lives, strengthening communities, and fostering economic growth. We serve thousands of adults annually across New Jersey, with the goal of empowering individuals to achieve greater self-sufficiency, participate fully in society, and reach their educational and professional goals.
What We Do
Literacy New Jersey relies on a network of trained volunteers who provide one-on-one tutoring and group classes, focusing on adult learners who face challenges such as low literacy, limited English proficiency, or difficulty with technology.
Through our network of trained volunteer tutors, Literacy New Jersey provides free, personalized instruction in reading, writing, math, and English language skills. Tutors work with adults in small groups to help them achieve their personal, professional, and educational goals. Literacy New Jersey and its affiliates proudly offer adult literacy services across all counties in New Jersey, empowering learners to improve their lives and communities.
Our services include:
- Offering free adult literacy services in twelve counties: Burlington, Gloucester, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean, Sussex, Warren, Union, Hudson, Atlantic, and Cape.
- Providing comprehensive training to prepare community volunteers to tutor adults.
- Providing professional development, technical assistance, training and other support services to our affiliate member programs.
- Creating and sharing instructional materials and training on key topics in adult literacy.
- Advocating on behalf of a statewide network of programs for increased funding and increased visibility for the need for adult literacy services.
