Volunteer: Museum Volunteer Docents
The docents of the Stone Harbor Museum act as the gateway to the history of Stone Harbor. Our volunteers work in 3 hour shifts welcoming our visitors and facilitating their experience throughout our exhibits. On-the-job training is offered, and new docents are paired with experienced ones for the first few shifts. Residents and non-residents are welcome to apply. DOCENT DESCRIPTION Be at least 16 years of age Have an interest in Stone Harbor history and in learning something new every day Have excellent interpersonal communication skills Can commit to working at least 2 days a month Answer visitor questions, and serve as a museum liaison Professional casual attire is expected – hoodies, sweatpants or ripped jeans are inappropriate Be comfortable standing for 3 hours Volunteer expectations may include but are not limited to: o Welcoming visitors to the Stone Harbor Museum o Responding to inquiries, comments, and feedback from diverse audiences clearly, courteously and effectively o Using knowledge of museum content to guide visitor learning in the Stone Harbor Museum's public spaces o Initiating and facilitating conversations with visitors by using objects to spark new questions and ideas. o Staffing exhibitions, public spaces and exterior museum areas as needed to engage the public in conversation and provide assistance o Using available resources to answer visitor questions o Calmly and professionally resolving issues that arise from visitors or bring any escalating problems to the attention of our Volunteer Manager, when appropriate/necessary Whether helping longtime residents, or tourists new to Stone Harbor, being a docent is always rewarding and FUN.
